The Lively Arts at Indiana University of Pennsylvania will present the Nichole Canuso Dance Company in Wandering Alice, a unique dance and movement work. The piece, limited to fifty audience members per performance, will be held in and around Fisher Auditorium of the IUP Performing Arts Center. Performances are set for Wednesday, April 14, 2010, at 7:00 and 9:30 p.m.; Thursday, April 15, at 7:00 and 9:00 p.m.; and Friday, April 16, at 7:00 and 9:00 p.m.
The touring dance company will be joined by members of the IUP Dance Theater, taking the audience on a guided journey that wanders through the performance spaces. The work travels through slippery identity into a sea of unruly memories, creating a surreal and ever-changing voyage for the senses.
Initially inspired by the writings of Lewis Carroll and Haruki Murakami, Wandering Alice will transform the Performing Arts Center into a dreamlike landscape where audiences are free to watch, wander, get lost, and be found. The audience will follow along as creator and choreographer Nichole Canuso becomes Alice, a curious wanderer who moves from one adventure to another in this distinctive dance experience.
Carolyn Huckabay of The Philadelphia City Paper described the work as “magical…winsome, wonderful…unexpected, exquisite, at times otherworldly. That we get to experience it, too, was like being let in on a secret and promising to keep it to yourself.”
She continued by explaining, “you just can’t get that feeling sitting in a theater, removed from the fantasy. I left the show feeling a little lighter.”
Wandering Alice premiered during the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival in September 2008. The Indiana performances marks the second time the full work will be performed. The piece features an original score by three-time Barrymore Award-winning composer James Sugg and musician/composer Michael Kiley.
