IUP Continuing Unity Ball Tradition With Global Met Gala Celebrating Cultural Identities and Intersectionality

IUP’s DEI Alliance will celebrate and embrace cultural identities and intersectionality at the 2024 Unity Ball Global Met Gala on April 11.  The event is open to the IUP community and there is no admission charge, but reservations are recommended by March 29.

Outdoor Public Chanukah Menorah Lighting, Gathering, Planned at IUP Dec. 11

Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Hillel IUP and the IUP Holocaust Remembrance Committee will partner with Rabbi Horowitz from the Altoona Chabad for an outdoor public Chanukah menorah lighting on December 11 at 6:00 p.m.

IUP Holocaust Remembrance Committee Hosting Holocaust Survivor in Honor of Holocaust Remembrance Day

In honor of Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day), the Holocaust Remembrance Committee at Indiana University of Pennsylvania will host Holocaust Survivor Solange Lebovitz at 5:00 p.m. on April 18 at IUP’s Eberly Auditorium.

The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education is in the process of implementing a common Student Information System across the State System schools. IUP is scheduled to begin implementing OneSIS in January 2024.

IUP Hosting Author and Academic Montás for Discussion on Importance of “Great Books”

Author and academic Roosevelt Montás will present “Rescuing Socrates: How the Great Books Changed My Life and Why They Matter for a New Generation” at Indiana University of Pennsylvania on March 2 at 7:30 p.m. in Sutton Hall’s Gorell Auditorium. The presentation is free and open to the community.

IUP to Present “Nine Days in the Sun,” Exploring Shifting the Racial Balance, Social Order

Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Theater-By-The-Grove will present Mark Clayton Southers’ “Nine Days in the Sun” at IUP. This initiative begins Theater-By-The-Grove’s association with Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company, where Southers is the founding artistic director. The play explores a world where dark skin is the desired tone, so the racial balance is shifted and the social order in America is turned upside down.

IUP Hosting Guest Artist Phillips for Program About “Lift Every Voice and Sing—The Black National Anthem”

Moses Phillips, who teaches ethnomusicology, music theory, and cultural studies in the Mass Communications Department at CUNY, will present “The Brothers Johnson: ‘Lift Every Voice’ Social Justice Through Song" on February 8 at 3:30 p.m. in room 225 of Jane Leonard Hall.

Algerian Human Rights Activist to Visit Campus

Anouar Rahmani, writer and human rights activist from Algeria, will visit campus on Wednesday, October 12, 2022. He will hold an informal meet and greet during the Common Hour in the Folger Student Center and will present to the greater IUP community at 4:00 p.m. in Leonard Hall, room 225.

Unity Ball Celebrates Latino Culture, Intersectionality

Celebrating Latino culture and intersectionality, Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Latino Student Organization (LaSO) will host the inaugural IUP Unity Ball on April 23 from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. in the IUP Hadley Union Building Ohio Room. The event will include refreshments catered by Casa Jaliso and dancing. Formal attire is requested. It is free and open to the community.

Be Heard Anonymous Survey of Community Attitudes about Sexual Violence Launches on April 12

On April 12, 2022, the IUP Haven Project and Social Equity and Title IX Office will begin an anonymous survey of students to learn more about issues related to inappropriate sexual behavior.

Implicit Bias Workshops for Students and Employees

Justin Brown, dynamic speaker and IUP alumnus, will lead two virtual workshops on "Implicit Bias"—one for students on April 7 and one for employees on April 14. Both will assist our campus community in becoming a more inclusive environment.

They Walked, They Spoke, and IUP Listened

LGBTQIA Flag Symbolizes IUP’s Support

When LGBTQIA+ students said flying a rainbow flag can help more students feel included on campus, IUP responded. The new flag and pole, located just south of Elkin Hall’s Great Room, will be formally dedicated Tuesday, October 12, at noon. Learn how support for LGBTQIA+ students at IUP goes well beyond raising a flag.
