Goldwater Winner Arie Van Wieren Selected as Ali-Zaidi Award Finalist

After careful review of the 10 nominees put forth by IUP faculty across all academic programs, IUP President Michael Driscoll and Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Tim Moerland have selected Arie Van Wieren, a biochemistry major from Indiana, as IUP’s finalist for the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Ali-Zaidi Award.

IUP a Finalist for Two Pittsburgh Technology Council Tech 50 Awards

Indiana University of Pennsylvania is the sole higher education finalist for the “Top COVID Pivot” award from the Pittsburgh Technology Council and is the sole higher education finalist for the Pittsburgh Technology Council’s 2020 Tech 50 Awards in the Non-Profit-Education-Community category.

2020 Summer Academies for Faculty and Staff

IUP’s Summer Academy is designed to help faculty and staff gain new perspectives and skills in using technology in teaching, as well as in organizing and planning events and providing support to students. The 2020 Summer Academy for faculty begins June 1; Summer Academy for staff begins June 15. Faculty registrations are due Tuesday, May 26.

Student Evaluation of Instruction

Course evaluations are underway. For the spring 2020 semester, regular face-to-face classes have been converted to online. Therefore, all student evaluations of instruction will be online as well. Instructions are being emailed to students and faculty.

IUP’s Assessment Progress Shared at Middle States Conference

The creation of a sustainable, university-wide learning assessment plan at IUP was the featured topic of a concurrent session at the 2019 Middle States Annual Conference. “Three Steps Toward Sustainable Assessment” was presented on December 10 by Bryna Siegel Finer, Edel Reilly, and Karen Rose Cercone.

IUP Sociology Professor Selected as Director of Public Health Program

Diane Shinberg, a faculty member in the Department of Sociology at IUP, has been selected as the director of IUP’s new Public Health program. The program in Public Health is interdisciplinary, leveraging faculty, existing coursework ,and infrastructure from three IUP colleges: Health and Human Services; Humanities and Social Sciences; and Natural Sciences and Mathematics.

Information sessions will be conducted in September and October for faculty where features of IUP’s Student Success Collaborative Advisor Platform will be highlighted. This is a web-based tool that can assist advisors working with their advisees in a variety of situations, such as course registration and reviewing academic progress.
