IUP Vice President for Administration and Finance Debra Fitzsimons has named Anthony Clement as interim director of IUP's Department of Public Safety and University Police.
Clement, of Penn Run, will begin his work at IUP on February 17. A national search for the permanent director of the department will begin during the spring semester.
Clement, who has 35 years of law enforcement experience, retired on February 14 from the Indiana Borough Police Department at the rank of lieutenant and supervisor of the Criminal Investigation Division after 33 years of service in the department, promoted to detective, corporate, and detective sergeant before achieving his current rank in 2015.
He joined the Indiana Borough Police after three years of service as police officer and chief of police for the Clymer Borough Police Department. He has served as an instructor for the IUP Criminal Justice Training Center for 20 years.
"Mr. Clement has many years of experience in law enforcement in the community, including working closely with the IUP Department of Public Safety and University Police," Fitzsimons said. "I am confident he will provide excellent leadership during this transitional period."
Clements attended the FBI National Academy and completed training at the IUP Criminal Justice Training Center in 1984 and coursework in IUP's Department of Criminology. He has completed an extensive list of additional specialized training, ranging from Naloxone training for law enforcement to "combating major crimes in modern times" to interviewing strategies. He achieved a Crime Scene Examiner Certificate in 2008.
He has several letters of appreciation and recognitions for performance related to specific crimes and incidents.
"I am extremely proud and humbled to accept the appointment of interim director of the Department of Public Safety and University Police at Indiana University of Pennsylvania," Clement said. "I am looking forward to working alongside the exceptional men and women of the IUP Campus Police Department and in conjunction with the faculty, staff, administration, and student body of IUP to continue to promote a safe and effective learning environment.
"I want to thank Dr. Michael Driscoll, president of IUP, and Dr. Debra Fitzsimons, vice president of administration and finance, for affording me this wonderful opportunity to finish out my law enforcement career at such a renowned institution."
