Parker Bradley, a junior chemistry major, showcased his research at the prestigious Undergraduate Research at the Capitol – Pennsylvania event on Tuesday, March 25, 2025. Held in the Main Rotunda of the Capitol Complex in Harrisburg, the annual event brings together undergraduate researchers, faculty mentors, and Pennsylvania legislators to highlight the innovative research taking across the state.

Bradley was one of only two students from IUP selected to present their research at this highly competitive event. His poster presentation, titled “Photochemical Studies of Anticancer Ruthenium-Platinum Bimetallic Complexes Adsorbed on Montmorillonite,” highlights research he has been conducting for the past one-and-a-half years under the mentorship of Avijita Jain, a professor in the Madia Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Physics.
The research explores the potential of ruthenium-platinum bimetallic complexes in cancer treatment, with a focus on how these compounds interact with montmorillonite, a type of clay mineral. The project aims to enhance understanding of photochemical properties that may contribute to the development of novel anticancer therapies.
With both the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and the Senate in session on the day of the event, the Capitol was abuzz with activity, providing student researchers like Bradley with an invaluable opportunity to engage directly with lawmakers. URC-PA serves as a platform for students to not only present their findings but also to discuss the significance of undergraduate research with state legislators and their staff.
Bradley’s participation underscores the Madia Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Physics’s commitment to fostering undergraduate research and highlights its role in advancing scientific discovery. The department’s dedication to providing students with research opportunities continues to produce impactful contributions to scientific research. His work exemplifies the strength of student-led research, high-quality mentorship and academic excellence within the department.
