Graduate Assistantships

Graduate Assistantships (GA)

Graduate aassistants work under the supervision of a faculty member for either 10 or 20 hours/week. In return, they are provided with a partial tuition reduction and a monetary stipend that is distributed throughout the graduate assistant contract period, including fall and spring semesters.

The Department of Counseling and Human Development typically offers several 10-hour graduate assistantships (GA; 10 hours/week of assistantship service) and a minimal number of 20-hour assistantships (20 hours/week of assistantship service) each year.

Graduate assistantship duties vary by supervisor and may include helping faculty members with teaching, scholarship, and/or university service activities. Assistantships are viewed as an encouragement or reward for continued academic excellence rather than as a sole means to alleviate financial need.

Ten-hour/week graduate assistants must hold at least 6 credits and 20-hour/week graduate assistants must hold at least 9 credits per semester.

How to be considered for a GA

Doctoral and master's program applicants should indicate interest in being considered for a GA on their program applications. Master's degree applicants will attend GA interviews during the department's Admissions Workshop, and doctoral applicants will be contacted by a departmental representative to discuss GA opportunities.

Current doctoral and master's degree students who do not presently hold a GA and wish to be considered for one should message the Department of
