The Laboratory for Physical Sciences, Advanced Computing Systems team in the NSA’s Research Directorate, is joining their counterparts in the Capabilities and Operations Directorates to provide a select number of undergraduate students an exciting 10-week summer internship opportunity at LPS, located in the Research Park building complex adjacent to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
The Future Computing Summer Internship program was established in 2022 with the goal of exposing participants to high-performance computing (HPC), a field critical to national security, discovery, and technological innovation.
FCSI is intended for students who will have completed their junior year by spring 2025 (expected to graduate in spring 2026 or after) and who are pursuing degrees in math, computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or STEM-related fields with strong mathematical and computer programming foundations and technical skills relevant to HPC.
Please note: Only US citizens are eligible to apply.
Program Overview
Internship Dates: June 2–August 8, 2025, in Cantonsville, MD
Application Window: September 15–November 30, 2024
FCSI seeks to encourage talented undergraduate students to pursue studies and careers in HPC by engaging them in exciting, ongoing technical projects that further cultivate their academic and technical talents during the 10-week program. Under the mentorship of NSA experts, interns will gain valuable skills in a variety of areas and applications relevant to HPC.
Some of the previous FCSI projects include adapting graph, linear algebra, number theory, and data analytics algorithms to supercomputers; and training new machine learning models, including quantum algorithms on specialized computer clusters, or researching the viability of using machines and a non-VonNeumann computer architecture.
At the conclusion of the internship, participants will present the results of their work to NSA senior leaders, managers, technical personnel, and research and academic partners.
