It’s the third week of National Preparedness Month and what you do before a disaster can make a dramatic difference in your ability to cope with and recover from it.

Natural disasters don’t wait for a convenient time. Preparing for them shouldn’t wait either. Start today by signing up for alerts, safe-guarding important documents, and taking other low cost and no cost preparedness actions to lessen the impact of disasters and emergencies for you and your family.

Week 3: Prepare for Disasters

It is important to have a plan and an emergency kit, taking the following steps can create a more orderly and rapid response during a disaster:

  • Take personal responsibility for being aware of local weather conditions.
  • Sign up for CodeRED and receive local, public safety alerts via telephone, text message, and email directly for Indiana County.
  • Develop an emergency communication plan for you and your family.
  • Build a kit. Being prepared means having your own foodwater and other needed supplies to last for several days.
