As summer comes to an end and students begin moving back to campus and returning to their classrooms, IUP Emergency Management offers ways to help make sure students are safe.

Emergency Notifications

IUP has options for students and employees to receive emergency information through email, text messages, university computers via a desktop alert system, and voice calls. Family and community members can also sign up to receive text message alerts. To learn more or to register, please visit IUP Emergency Management.

In the event of an emergency, information will also be posted on the IUP Emergency Information web page and may be reported via the radio, TV, social media, and other sources as possible. Event cancellations due to an emergency will be posted to the Emergency Information web page as well.

Weather Safety

Get in the habit of checking weather forecasts from a trusted source. Knowing when snow, severe weather, heavy rain, and excessive cold and heat are in the forecast can help you to prepare. You can find up-to-date local weather information from the National Weather Service by typing your zip code in the search or clicking your town on the map

  • Get Alerts –Make sure you’re signed up for severe weather alerts at home and school. You can join the AlertPA notification system from CodeRED for emergency and weather-related alerts, health notifications, and other updates from Commonwealth and federal agencies.

A few extra tips about on-campus safety:

  • Blue-light Phones –Blue-light phones are strategically placed around campus and connect directly to campus police. View the interactive campus map to learn the locations.
  • University Police – Know the university police phone number, 724-357-2141, and have it on speed dial. Also, a reminder that our department is now located at Robertshaw.
  • Escort Service - Individuals are urged not to walk alone and to take personal security precautions, especially during evening/early morning hours. An officer will meet you at your location and walk with you to your destination. Every effort is made to accommodate the request when an escort is requested.
  • Don’t leave your dorm or apartment without locking up—no matter how quickly you plan to return.
