A team of two IUP students were the top performers in the fall 2024 CFA Society Pittsburgh Collegiate Stock Picker Challenge session, which ran from October 15 to December 15.

In the largest competition to date, 191 students signed up across more than 15 local universities, including Chatham, Duquesne, Franciscan University, Grove City, IUP, La Roche, Penn State, Penn State Behrend, Penn State World, Penn West, Pitt Greensburg, Robert Morris, University of Pittsburgh, W&J, Waynesburg, and WVU.

The top performing university team was IUP’s team, comprised of two students: Ronnie Fleck and Evan Sala. The IUP team had an average return of 16.51 percent, beating out the other colleges and the S&P 500! As a reward for winning the team challenge, the CFA Society Pittsburgh is making a donation to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank on behalf of IUP.

The Stock Picker Challenge “gives students the opportunity to pick their own portfolio of stocks and compete against their fellow peers for the best total return.” This activity is designed to give a large group of students an opportunity to participate in a CFA (chartered financial analyst) event with minimal time commitment.

IUP students were encouraged to participate by their instructor, Malcom Polley. Both team members have been active, dedicated members of the IUP Student Managed Investment Portfolio (SMIP) student organization.
