Matt Vetter (Faculty, English Composition, and Applied Linguistics) and Oksana Moroz (PhD candidate, English Composition, and Applied Linguistics) have published a course design essay in the most recent issue of Composition Studies.
"Wikipedia-based Education for First Year Composition" shares the design of a first-year writing course, co-taught by Vetter and Moroz in spring 2019. English 101: Composition I, Writing in Wikipedia familiarizes students with the processes of knowledge production in Wikipedia by asking them to conduct research on, evaluate, and develop the encyclopedia's article content.
The course design is accompanied by a theoretical rationale that leverages Wikipedia-based pedagogy to teach transferrable writing knowledge related to discourse community, subject, genre, rhetoric, and process. A critical reflection further contextualizes the course design with qualitative data from a focus group conducted with students.
