The University Museum at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) is pleased to present IUP/NYC, an exhibition showcasing the artistic journeys of three IUP alumni who have made significant contributions to the art world both domestically and internationally. This special exhibition will run from March 29–May 3, 2025, with a public reception on Saturday, March 29, from 6:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m.
IUP/NYC invites visitors to experience the dynamic and evolving work of Michael Madigan, Chuck Olson, and Richard Purdy—three artists whose careers have spanned decades and continents. Their distinct artistic practices, shaped by memory, experience, and intellectual curiosity, offer a compelling look into the diverse paths of contemporary art.
Michael Madigan explores the interplay of memory and time in his evocative paintings. Drawing inspiration from site visits to ancient locations across the U.S. and Europe, as well as from dreams, his works layer experiences to create images that evolve with prolonged observation.
Chuck Olson approaches painting as a lifelong composition, shaped by experiences, travel, and artistic discourse. With a career spanning over 40 years in both painting and academia, Olson’s work reflects a dialogue between creativity, intellectual pursuit, and personal history.
Richard Purdy combines science and art in his wax encaustic paintings, inspired by Stephen Wolfram’s mathematical theories. Utilizing a structured grid system, his work transforms numerical patterns into dazzling, intricate compositions of color and light, bridging the realms of abstraction and logic.
Join us for an opening reception on Saturday, March 29, from 6:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m. at the University Museum in Sutton Hall. Guests will have the opportunity to engage with the featured artists and gain insights into their creative processes. This event is free and open to the public.
