The IUP Department of Music recognizes the exceptional nature of operating during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, in following guidelines set by IUP and the CDC and in accordance with the most current scholarship on the spread of COVID-19 in musical
settings, the music department has created these guidelines in order to have a safe and successful fall 2020 semester.

Air purifiers have been placed in Cogswell rooms 121, 120, 126 and should arrive soon for faculty studios and Zoom practice rooms.
7:00 a.m.–10:30 p.m. Please note that weekend hours have not yet been established.
Rooms 102, 126, 203, and 303 have Owl Meeting Pro cameras; room 301 has an older system designed for Zoom. Other rooms in the building may only have a personal webcam that is not suitable for a hybrid session.
We ask that students and faculty clean/sanitize desks, stands, and surfaces (including piano keys) in classrooms, studios, and practice rooms before sessions. Supplies will be provided.
No sharing of instruments, mouthpieces, or reeds.
Spit valves should not be emptied onto the floor. Disposable absorbent pads are recommended. Another option is a Lysol-soaked cloth in a plastic bag for reuse.
Be mindful of where you place swabs, and disinfect your hands after handling your swab.
You’ve probably heard this by now, but wash your hands regularly with soap and water and avoid touching your face and adjusting your mask.
Current Pennsylvania guidelines limit indoor gatherings to 25 people; however, a larger audience (up to the socially distanced capacity of the room) is permissible in the context of an educational event such as a student degree recital, student ensemble
performance, or departmental recital. Such an event must only include audience members who are IUP students, faculty, or staff
If an audience will include guests who are not IUP-affiliated, the maximum number of people in the room must not exceed 25, including performers, ushers, faculty, and audience members
If non-IUP audience members are invited, the faculty member in charge of the recital or DO ushers should submit a list of attendees to the Music Department chair in case contact tracing is necessary.
We encourage recitalists to schedule in Gorell Hall to reduce traffic in Cogswell and to free up that space for other uses.
Only students performing degree recitals may schedule recitals for fall 2020.
There should be one hour between each recital to allow for air cleaning and vacation of the space
Aerosol-producing recitals should be limited to 30 minutes, or two 30-minute halves with a 15-minute intermission for air clearance.
The faculty member in charge of the event or DO ushers must verify that those entering are IUP-affiliated, and must count audience members to ensure social distance capacity is not exceeded.
If tickets are required, this should be done online.
Doors will open 15 minutes before the recital. Attendees are encouraged to arrive and sit in the hall and should not congregate in the lobby.
Except for the performer(s), everyone in the room must wear masks for the duration of the event. Those not in compliance will be provided a disposable mask; if they continue to refuse, the faculty member in charge will ask them to leave.
The four departmental recitals will be presented online this semester at their regularly scheduled times. One or more may be held in Fisher Auditorium, depending on availability. Attendance will be taken online for live-streamed events.
All concerts and recitals in the Department of Music will be live-streamed, either by Al Teare or by the student recitalist using a departmental webcam. All large ensemble, studio ensemble, and faculty recitals will be live streamed via the Department
of Music YouTube channel. Student recitals may be streamed to a personal Facebook Live event or YouTube channel. Students may share the link to the public event with Taylor Reken (firstname.lastname@example.org)
prior to the event to be distributed to the music student body for attendance. Zoom Q2n cameras can be made available to students presenting recitals for high-quality video and audio.
Recital attendance for all fall 2020 events will occur via D2L quizzes. Attendance quizzes will be available 45 minutes after the start time of the event and will be open for at least 30 minutes. For example, a concert that begins at 7:00 p.m. will have
its attendance quiz available from 7:45 to 8:15 p.m. Program information should be shared with Taylor Reken at least one week prior to the event. Programs will be saved as a PDF, and a public link will be provided to be posted on Facebook or YouTube.
Recitalists should also email Professor Baumer five true-false or multiple-choice questions that are relevant to the recital. The answers should be obvious to anyone who attended the recital.
The overall requirement for recitals will be reduced for the fall 2020 term only. Students must attend the four departmental recitals, as well as four other approved performances sponsored by the Music Department or the Lively Arts. Deficits from prior
semesters will remain as they were and will not be waived. For example: if a student is missing five recitals from prior semesters, they must still make up those five recitals either in person or online.
Maximum occupancy will be posted at each classroom.
Traffic patterns, entries, and exits to Cogswell will be indicated with signs and decals.
Chairs, tables, and desks are marked in classrooms.
Max occupancy in the elevator is three (3).
You must maintain a six-foot distance in all areas. Because there are many unanswered questions about safe distance for wind players/vocalists in our rooms, consider distances greater than six feet.
Congregating in the hallways, student lounge, and classrooms is not allowed.
All music ensembles will have a face-to-face meeting component for fall 2020, but will alter their usual practices to mitigate the potential transmission of the coronavirus.
Indoor ensembles that produce aerosols will meet in small groups, usually no more than 10 players at a time, and will meet in the largest available space, with seating arrangements spaced at intervals of at least six feet. This distance should
be greater for singers and some wind players.
Rehearsals for indoor ensembles producing aerosols are limited to 30 minutes.
Masks will be required for indoor ensembles to the extent possible with the instrument.
Marching band will meet exclusively outside, and members will maintain six-foot distancing at all times.
Each ensemble director will articulate specific policies for the ensemble, including bell covers, absorbent pads for collecting water, entrance and exit procedures, and so forth. Adherence to these policies is mandatory for participation in ensembles.
For students who do not feel comfortable returning to campus, the chairperson will work with the student’s advisor and the ensemble directors to find an online solution for at least one ensemble.
Students returning for any face-to-face classes will be expected to participate in the face-to-face ensembles as usual.
IUP’s stated policy is that you must wear a mask while indoors unless you are alone in the room.
Wind players: Slitted masks are required in rehearsals. In private lessons, whoever is not playing must always wear a mask unless the lesson is in a large room.
Each studio faculty member should discuss with their students the best PPE for their instruments and provide resources for how to purchase these materials (bell covers, pee pads, bags, slitted masks, etc.). In ensembles, students may be required
to use this PPE at all times. If students lose these items, they must purchase replacements.
No browsing allowed—faculty or staff will retrieve your items.

Zoom-equipped rooms have been created for applied lessons in rooms 223, 224, 225, 324, 325, and 326. Vocal lessons will have first priority in scheduling for these rooms.
A sheet will be posted each week for all practice rooms: write your name, instrument, and the time when you began and finished practicing. Allow for 30 minutes of air clearing time between practice sessions for wind players and vocalists.
Use the forms available online to schedule events in Cogswell, Gorell Recital Hall, or Fisher Auditorium.
Requests must be made at least 24 hours in advance; please be patient, as we may not always be able to accommodate your request.
Students presenting degree recitals take first priority for scheduling rehearsal space with pianists.
Faculty who would like to move their regular lessons to a larger space should contact email@example.com.
Several class sections have been moved already to comply with safe-distancing guidelines—please check your locations to make sure before the semester starts.
Student organizations should follow the guidelines recommended to them from their national boards.
Whenever possible, meetings should be held virtually to accommodate safe occupancy in our rooms and to free up space for rehearsals, lessons, and practice in larger spaces.
Wind players and vocalists are especially encouraged to use Smartmusic or prerecorded accompaniments.
