The African American Cultural Center will present a seven-part documentary, Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick? featuring Anthropology professor Victor Garcia.
The first three parts of the documentary will be screened at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 25, 2010, in the Hadley Union Building Ohio Room. The last four parts will be shown at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, in the Delaney Hall Multipurpose Room, G-5.
Admission is free. The documentary, presented in honor of Women's History Month, will discuss racial and socioeconomic issues in health. Garcia talks in the documentary about immigrant Latino families living in a community in Pennsylvania.
Garcia is a professor of cultural anthropology and associate director of Cultural and Ethnic Studies at the Mid-Atlantic Research and Training Institute on campus. He teaches classes on ethnographic research, Latin America, and issues facing Latinos in the United States, with a specialty in Latino and Latin American studies.
The documentary, which originally aired on PBS, shows individuals and families across the nation and their struggle to gain equal rights when it comes to their health. It also explores the correlation between social class and illness.
