Had Holly Branthoover stayed in law school, her life certainly would have taken a different turn. Instead, she found her true passion in counseling, and she has never looked back. Learn more about her in this week’s Meet Our Faculty feature.

What is it about the counseling and human development field that initially drew you in—and ultimately keeps you interested?

I am, by nature, a people person. I am interested in learning about people and making connections with them. I originally was in a different master’s program and realized quickly that it was not a fit. At the time, I was working as a bachelor’s level counselor with adolescents and really enjoyed the position. However, I knew I needed more education to really learn how to be effective. Getting my master’s degree in counseling was the next logical step. It is the relationships with people, students, and my colleagues that continue to keep me interested in the field.

Why do you enjoy teaching in this discipline?

I love seeing students progress through the training. In the master’s program, it is such a joy to see students learning the counseling profession and becoming true helpers in their practicum and field experiences. For doctoral students, I enjoy seeing them present at conferences and get involved in leadership and research. Like with the master’s students, it is a joy to see doctoral students come into their own as supervisors and teachers.

What advice would you give students about how to succeed in college?

For counselors and counselor educators, my best advice is to be ready to put your whole self into the training. Counseling and educating are not professions you do; they are who you are. Make a space in your life so you can immerse yourself in your student experience. Practice balance and wellness so you can give your best. Get involved and connected with your faculty and peers. Those connections and support will help you when things get challenging.

Tell us something most of your students may not know about you.

I never planned to be a counselor! During high school and undergraduate work, I planned and prepared to go to law school. Within the first few weeks of law school, I knew it was not for me. It took me some time to work up to leaving, but it was the best decision of my life. When you love your work, it does not feel like work, and I will never regret the decision to change paths.
