In honor of National Police Week, we recognize the service and sacrifice of federal, state, local, and Tribal law enforcement. In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the calendar week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week (May 9–15, 2021).
Each year, during National Police Week, our nation celebrates the contributions of law enforcement from around the country, recognizing their hard work, dedication, loyalty, and commitment to keeping our communities safe. Peace Officers Memorial Day, which every year falls on May 15, specifically honors law enforcement officers killed or disabled in the line of duty.
This year, IUP's Police Department will host a memorial service on Wednesday, May 12, at noon in Toretti Auditorium at the Kovalchick Athletic and Convention Center to honor those killed in the line of duty. In 2020, we lost 362 law enforcement officers due to line of duty deaths, 12 of which were from Pennsylvania.
The public is welcome to attend this memorial service.
