The IUP Department of Public Safety would like to welcome students back to the start of the spring semester. As we welcome you back, we would like to remind you of some safety awareness tips.
Vehicle Safety
- Avoid leaving any valuables—such as laptops, bags, or electronics—in plain sight inside your vehicle. If you must leave these items behind, take the extra step to conceal them in the trunk or under seats before you park.
- Lock your vehicle to prevent theft and unauthorized access.
- Close all windows in your vehicle, including the sunroof.
- Never leave a running vehicle unattended.
Residence Hall Safety
- Do not allow strangers access to your residence hall.
- Always verify the identity of anyone requesting entry, especially if they exhibit suspicious behavior.
- Always keep your room door locked, particularly when you’re alone.
Personal Safety
- Ensure your cell phone is fully charged and is with you before leaving. Many residence halls have charging stations in the lobby and the library if you need a place to charge your phone.
- Be cautious about accepting rides or walking with individuals you do not know well. Similarly, do not offer rides to acquaintances or individuals you do not know well.
- Walk in well-lit areas, and be cautious when walking on ice- or snow-covered sidewalks, roads, and parking lots.
- When heading to your vehicle, residence, or class, have your keys, electronic key, or I-Card ready to avoid fumbling or distraction.
- Never accept drinks from strangers, and never leave your drink unattended.
- Take advantage of campus bus services, as they operate in well-lit areas. This is a university-offered service and is free when you show your physical I-Card.
- Police Escort Service: Individuals are urged not to walk alone and to practice personal security precautions, especially during evening/early morning hours. An officer will meet you at your location and walk with you to your destination. Every effort is made to accommodate the request when an escort is requested.
- Do not lend your keys, ID, or I-Card to anyone, regardless of how well you know them.
- If you lose your keys, ID, or I-Card, report it immediately to ensure locks can be changed or the ID suspended.
- Limit the amount of personal information you share online to protect your privacy and identity. Be cautious about what you post and who can see it.
- Avoid using headphones or earbuds while walking, or only use one headphone or earbud to stay aware of your surroundings.
- If you have an animal on campus, please make sure they are on a leash or in proper pet carriers when you are outside of your residence.
As always, if you see something, say something. If you observe any suspicious individuals, vehicles, or activities, report them immediately to the IUP University Police at 724-357-2141.
