Charles Fey has been selected to serve as the interim vice president for Student Affairs at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Fey will begin work at IUP on August 15.
Rhonda Luckey, who has served in the role since February 2006, will be retiring from the position as the fall 2018 semester begins.
“Dr. Luckey is a key member of the leadership team and has been incredibly dedicated to this university, our students, and our continued growth and success,” IUP President Michael Driscoll said. “She is truly a part of the fabric of this university, and she will be missed. I appreciate her continued dedication to the work as we make this transition in leadership.”
Fey retired in 2017 after a 44-year career in higher education. Most recently, he was the vice president for academic support and student affairs at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, NJ. Fey has been a national leader in creating campus climate that promotes student achievement and student success.
“Dr. Fey comes to us with decades of leadership in almost every imaginable facet of student affairs programming,” IUP President Michael Driscoll said. “I am confident that his experiences will serve IUP well and keep us moving forward in our continued focus on student success.”
Fey has received numerous awards, including the Esther Lloyd Jones Professional Service Award from ACPA; Diamond Honoree of ACPA's Foundation; Outstanding Service Award (twice) from the Commission on Administrative Leadership of ACPA; and an exemplary service award from MCPA and most recently received the award of Pillar of the Profession by NASPA, Student Affairs Professionals in Higher Education. He was also the gubernatorial appointee to the New Jersey Board of Higher Education Student Assistance Authority prior to his retirement.
He has been a strong supporter of diversity and social justice and a champion of access for all students who demonstrate a determination to succeed.
Fey earned his bachelor's degree in liberal arts and his master of education degree in counselor education and college student personnel services, both from the Pennsylvania State University. He holds an EdD in higher education administration from Texas A&M University.
Prior to New Jersey Institute of Technology, he was vice president for Student Engagement and Success at the University of Akron; vice president for Student Affairs at University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC); dean of Students at the University of Texas at El Paso; vice president and dean of Student Life at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio; dean of Students at St. Mary's University, also in San Antonio; associate dean of Student Affairs at Keene State College; director of Housing/Resident Life at Catholic University of America, and associate dean of Students at Newbury College.
“I am pleased to join IUP at this time in its history, following in the footsteps of Dr. Rhonda Luckey, who has shown a deep concern and dedication for the students at the institution she has faithfully served for over 30 years,” Fey said.
“Today's college students are the most diverse, creative and inspiring perhaps in the history of our country. They inherit a world that desperately needs their leadership and their passionate idealism, and I relish this opportunity to work with them at IUP. My commitment to students and their success is rock solid, and I look forward to working closely with the exceptionally talented and dedicated faculty and staff of IUP, especially those in student affairs, to foster the learning and growth of all who choose to attend Indiana University of Pennsylvania.”
A search committee for the position will be established and will begin work in September.
