IUP students won’t want to miss this unique opportunity to personally connect with Black alumni from the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh areas, building relationships with potential mentors in various fields. The Black Experience Alumni Committee (BEAC) will host the two networking events, inviting many local Black alumni to join them.

Enjoy a relaxed evening of networking with alumni from a variety of professions, including education, law enforcement, communications, entrepreneurship, accounting, nutrition, finance, hospitality, culinary, nursing, and more.

Philadelphia 

The Philadelphia event will be at Bernie’s Manayunk on Monday, November 22. Hosts for the evening are BEAC members DeAnna Allen ’10, Felicia Fred ’81, and Debra Evans-Smith ’81.

DeAnna Allen is a co-founder of Gifted & Glory and is an alumna of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, majoring in journalism and public relations. As a student, she was a member of the IUP Ambassadors.

Felicia Fred, an alumna of the Eberly College of Business’s marketing program, works as project manager at the US Environmental Protection Agency and is a former IUP Alumni Board of Directors member.

Debra Evans-Smith, a retired FBI deputy assistant director, is an alumna of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences’ criminology program. She currently serves on the President’s Commission for Diversity and Inclusion at IUP, as well as the IUP Alumni Board of Directors.

Pittsburgh 

The Pittsburgh event will be held at the Rivers Club on Tuesday, November 23, hosted by BEAC members Jamaal Gosa ’15, M’17, and Phillip K. Woods ’00, D’17.

Jamaal Gosa is a restorative practice coordinator at the University of Pittsburgh’s Center on Race and Social Problems. He is an alumnus of the College of Education and Communications, earning his master’s degree in adult and community education.

Phillip Woods, an alumnus of the same college, earned a bachelor’s degree in education as well as a doctorate in administration and leadership studies. He is currently the superintendent of his alma mater, Aliquippa School District, and recently participated in the Diversity in the Workplace Alumni Panel presented by the IUP Career and Professional Development Center.
