After 37 years of service, she retired at the rank of major general. Her last assignment was as acting principal deputy assistant secretary of the Army for Manpower and Reserve Affairs. In 2018, Leslie received the 2018 Distinguished Alumni Award for her career achievements. She now lives in Dandridge, Tennessee, with her husband, Joseph. Her early assignments included conducting investigations in New Orleans, focusing on civil rights and white-collar crime, and later, learning Russian at the State Department’s Foreign Service Institute. Throughout her career, she worked extensively on Russian foreign counterintelligence and organized crime matters in Los Angeles and Washington, DC. Smith was promoted to supervisory special agent in 1998 and led espionage investigations, notably overseeing the case of former FBI Agent Robert P. Hanssen. She received several awards for her contributions to national security. After various leadership roles, including assistant special agent in charge in San Diego and chief of the Counterespionage Group at the CIA, Smith retired from the FBI in 2014. She returned in 2015 to work on diversity and inclusion initiatives before joining the Department of Energy as an inspector in 2019.
