The Old Maid and the Thief and The Telephone are a comical combination of one-act operas.

The Old Maid and the Thief tells the tale of Miss Todd and her maid, who both vie for the affections of a handsome vagabond. In The Telephone, two lovers face a different challenge caused by a young woman's obessions with her “communication device.” The operas, both sung in English, are filled with Menotti's incredibly witty words and ingenious music.
