Dr. Eileen W. Glisan, a member of the Spanish and Classical Languages Department, has been named the 2000–01 University Professor at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
The University Professorship is the highest annual award given by the university to a faculty member.
Dr. Lawerence K. Petit, university president, said the award was established to recognize reward and encourage IUP faculty members who demonstrate outstanding records in teaching, research and creative activities, and service. 
"Since coming to IUP in 1985, professor Glisan has earned a national reputation in the field of foreign language education," Pettit said. "She has been recognized repeatedly for her comprehensive achievement, vision and exemplary service to education and inspiring foreign language teachers."
Articles by Glisan have appeared in the most prestigious national and international journals, and her textbook, "Teachers Handbook: Contextualized Language Instruction," now in its second edition, is used in methods courses in virtually all undergraduate foreign language programs in the United States.
Her intermediate-level proficiency-based Spanish textbook, "Enlaces," also in its second edition, incorporates authentic readings and radio segments from Spanish speaking countries.
At IUP, she is highly respected as a teacher, adviser and curriculum innovator, especially for her creation in 1987 of IUP's FLISET program, which prepares elementary education majors to become bilingual/immersion Spanish teachers.
