Today, more than ever, Indiana University of Pennsylvania is a diverse community. It is critical that the IUP Counseling Center acts with intentionality in support of diversity, equity, and inclusion. We will promote and amplify the voices of those who have been marginalized. We will use every opportunity to create lasting systemic change. All of us have a responsibility to make the IUP community safe and welcoming to all its members. We will also advocate for everyone at IUP in our continued efforts to counter hate in all its forms.
The Counseling Center faculty and staff are committed to creating a safe and welcoming environment for all students that is respectful and affirming of all identities and characteristics. We honor the similarities and differences inherent in our relationship with you. We value this relationship as the cornerstone of services. We strive to recognize how our own identities and privileges impact ourselves, our work, and those around us. Our cultural backgrounds influence our beliefs, our interactions, our language, and our worldview.
We also acknowledge the impact of stereotypes, prejudice, discrimination, oppression, power, and privilege on our students’ lives. Numerous barriers may prevent students from seeking services, including fears of exploitation, being dismissed, or being misunderstood. Consequently, we promote feedback and continuously act to assess and remove barriers.
We are committed to fostering a community of acceptance, awareness, tolerance, and respect. The Counseling Center faculty and staff are very aware of those impacted by the race-based tragedies that have been occurring across our nation and the political actions designed to oppress and scare traditionally vulnerable populations. We denounce racism and bigotry in all forms, which all too often negatively impact well-being and the mental health of our student population.
