The Allenwood is a dining room located on the ground floor of Ackerman Hall. The Department of Hospitality Management services three classes out of the dining room.
The first class is Hospitality 220 Food Service Operations, which is an introductory class to food handling. The second class is Hospitality 330 Application of Food Production and Service, which consists of a lunch buffet that runs Tuesday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The last class is Hospitality 413 Restaurant Food Production and Service, which serves dinner from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday nights at a cost of two dinners for $50.
Weekly dinners are served in the Allenwood on Thursdays and features different theme nights curated by the students and professors. February 13 was the first dinner of 2020 and featured a Surf and Turf menu.
Just in time for Valentine's Day, guests of the Allenwood enjoyed a lovely meal featuring heart-shaped bruschetta, shrimp bisque, caesar salad, strip steak with grilled shrimp skewer with a side of green beans, and roasted fingerling potatoes. For dessert the students served a decadent chocolate lava cake with strawberry garnish.
The Department of Hospitality Management at IUP is the premier hotel, restaurant, tourism, and special event undergraduate program in the region. It is the largest program in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. One of the reasons the Department of Hospitality is one of the best programs is because of the hands-on management experience students receive in the curriculum within the Allenwood Lab.
A critical component of the curriculum is how the Hospitality Management student rotates through the Allenwood Lab. Students within both HOSP 330 and 413 scratch-cook the food in the commercial food production kitchen located in Ackerman 002. Each student must research themes for authenticity, use fresh ingredients, and taste-test all food prior to the approval by the instructor before it can be featured to the public. Each student must cost and design the final menu, personally cook the food, service it for the guests' enjoyment, and manage the entire dining experience and back-of-the-house operations.
Walk-ins to the Allenwood are welcomed, however it is highly suggested to make a reservation in advance.
The Department of Hospitality Management looks forward to serving many more dinners the rest of the semester and hopes that you would join us soon! To keep up with the happenings of the department, be sure to like us on Facebook and follow us on Instagram at @iuphospitalitymanagement.
