International Clubs, Programs, Events
Learning English is more fun when there are interesting activities to share with your new friends at the American Language Institute. Travel to historic places in the region, drive-in movie theaters, Fourth of July fireworks, and big city trips are just some of the activities planned throughout the academic year.
Activities for ALI Students
The staff plans events that give ALI students opportunities to learn about life in the United States, both on and off the university campus. We encourage students to check the activity board in Eicher for announcements and to sign up for events. Day trips and longer excursions are planned to coincide with the seasons throughout the year; and of course, ALI students are encouraged to participate in all IUP campus events.
One-Day Field Trips and Local Attractions
In addition to longer weekend excursions, ALI students visit attractions in the Indiana area. Day trips and activities include: a visit to Smicksburg Amish Country; bowling, skiing and ice skating; pumpkin carving at the local Autumn Festival; a visit to the Jimmy Stewart Museum; and celebrating the end of winter on Groundhog Day.
Pittsburgh University and Cultural Districts
Pittsburgh has been transformed from the time it was known as the "Steel City" into a city of museums and cultural attractions. The Andy Warhol museum, the Frick Art Museum, and Carnegie Science Center are several of the famous attractions in the city. Take the Duquesne Incline for a spectacular view of downtown Pittsburgh.
Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater
Considered by many people to be one of the best examples of American architecture, Fallingwater was built over a waterfall and incorporated into its woodland surroundings. Originally the summer residence of Pittsburgh's Kaufmann family, the home is now a museum honoring both the family and Frank Lloyd Wright, the architect who designed it.
Ohiopyle State Park
Located at the southern reaches of the Laurel Ridge, Ohiopyle State Park encompasses approximately 20,500 acres of rugged natural beauty and serves as the gateway to the Laurel Highlands. Close to major metropolitan areas and offering vast choices of activities, Ohiopyle State Park attracts millions of visitors annually.
Grove City Premium Outlets
This is an open-air shopping mall located in Grove City, Pennsylvania. About 50 miles north of Pittsburgh, Grove City Premium Outlets includes more than 130 brand-name outlet stores, a food court, and one of the Pittsburgh Steelers' official team stores. It is one of the largest outlet malls in the United States.
Kennywood Park
Kennywood is one of the oldest and most beloved amusement parks in America. Founded in 1898, Kennywood has thrilled and delighted both young and young-at-heart visitors for more than 110 years. Weekend Excursions
Longer excursions are scheduled over weekends so student class schedules are not disrupted. Trips to other destinations to experience local festivals and national holidays may be scheduled throughout the year in response to student requests.
Springtime in Washington, D.C.
Enjoy the beauty of the spring season in the US capital. Important sites include Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, and the White House and Houses of Congress. The Smithsonian Institution (the world's largest museum and research complex) includes 19 museums and galleries and the National Zoological Park.
Niagara Falls in the Summer
Visit one of the wonders of North America, Niagara Falls. See the power and majesty of the falls up close. Explore the Niagara Gorge on a variety of hiking trails. Take the Niagara Scenic Trolley Ride or enjoy Niagara Falls State Park. Put on a raincoat for a close-up view of the American and Bridal Veil Falls on the Cave of the Winds.
Autumn Colors in New York City
Conquering New York in one visit is impossible. Instead, hit the must-seesthe Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and then explore off the beaten path with visits to the Cloisters or one of the city's libraries. Indulge in the bohemian shops of the West Village or the fine dining of the Upper West Side. The bustling marketplace inside of Grand Central Station gives you a literal taste of the best the city has to offer.
