To have a complete understanding of a student's needs and to learn more about student specific programs, please visit IUP Education Abroad Program List.Your role is to guide and assist your advisee in their choice of program and the selection/approval of courses. Please do not hesitate to contact the Education Abroad Office with any questions.
Advisee has a desire to participate in an Education Abroad experience.
- Identify the best term for your student to go abroad.
- Aide student in program selection by using the IUP Office of International Education Program List site.
- Inform advisee to check the study abroad website for application deadlines and information
- Recommend that your advisee attend an Education Abroad information session. Commonly referred to as "Wednesday Workshops," the information sessions are held every week during the semester and provide the students with the basic information about studying abroad.
Advisee is applying to an Education Abroad program
- Engage in an initial discussion about the program the student is participating in.
- Why has you advisee chosen this program?
- What degree requirements will the program help him/her fulfill?
- Review the class selections available. Inform the student about what classes they are/are not allowed to take while abroad
Advisee is currently overseas participating in an Education Abroad program
- Your advisee may make changes to his/her schedule after arriving at the host university. They may ask for your advice concerning the changes. Remember to refer them to their international coordinator in the OIE and the IUP Transfer Credit evaluator. They can help your advisee with official course equivalency.
- Your advisee will also need to register for classes for the following semester upon their return. They may reach out to you for assistance in that process.
Advisee has returned from their Education Abroad Program
- It may take some time for your advisee's grades to post once the OIE has received their transcript. You will receive a copy of your advisee's transcript once it has been processed by the OIE.
- If a considerable amount of time has passed and your advisee's grade has not been posted, please contact the Office of Transfer Services in G-27 Sutton (724-357-5553).
- Encourage your advisee to visit the IUP Career and Professional Development Center for tips on updating their resume and how they can use the skills they learned while abroad.
