The Office of International Education advises all IUP faculty and staff traveling abroad on university business to follow these steps:
Obtain Valid Travel Documents
- US passport or home-country passport.
- Visa, if required by host country.
Stay Safe, Supported, and Connected
- Register for the US Department of State's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP): We strongly recommend that everyone going overseas enroll in STEP. This free service provided by the US Department of State connects your trip with the nearest US Embassy or Consulate. Travelers supply their information (flights, hotels/accommodations, and contact information), and, in turn, they will be notified by email blast, phone, or text message of any issues (natural disaster, civil unrest, or family emergency) that may arise. In the worst cases, STEP arranges for evacuation from the affected country (costs covered by the individual, IUP recommends purchasing Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation of Remains Insurance—see below).
- Obtain insurance coverage: IUP recommends that all travelers obtain Medical Evacuation and Repatriation of Remains coverage while they travel abroad. Having this coverage for you and all individuals traveling with you will provide you, and your loved ones, with peace of mind and a lot of relief should you need these services in an emergency. If your current insurance doesn’t cover medical evacuation and repatriation, you can purchase short-term coverage from many providers; but, CISI offers great coverage for a competitive price (~$15USD/week) for all approved, IUP-related international travel. Coverage also provides accident and sickness insurance, covering 100 percent of the expenses without requiring a deductible. For assistance or additional information, contact the OIE at intl-education@iup.edu. Register for group insurance. Traveling to Spain? Register for group insurance for Spain.
