What's Happening for Nursing and Allied Health Majors
Nursing majors can engage in many activities outside of the classroom, further enriching their enthusiasm for Nursing.
Student Nurse Association of Pennsylvania (SNAP)
The Student Nurse Association of Pennsylvania supports nurses throughout their education by offering information on current nursing issues and concerns.
SNAP-IUP is a division of the Student Nurses' Association of Pennsylvania, which is a constituent of the National Student Nurses' Association (NSNA). SNAP-IUP is open to all nursing majors and is designed to enhance education, political, and community awareness.
IUP has an active SNAP chapter, and members are involved in current legislative nursing issues, social and service projects, informative programs, and opportunities for interaction with nursing majors across the state and country.
Membership for the local chapter is free. The National Student Nurses Association determines national membership dues. Students who become members at the national level are automatically awarded state membership and are permitted to attend state and national conventions.
Alpha Tau Delta Service Fraternity
Alpha Tau Delta is a national fraternity for professional nurses to promote growth through networking. There are scholarships, grants, and merit awards awarded annually to students and individual chapters to plan educational, professional, social, and philanthropic programs.
To qualify, a student must be enrolled in a baccalaureate, master's, or doctoral degree program in an accredited school of nursing. The student must have a minimum 2.5 GPA.
Annually, this organization selects a local community agency as its philanthropic endeavor. IUP's chapter has been actively involved with fundraising for the American Heart Association (Heart Walk) and Big Brothers and Sisters (Volleyball and Midnight Bowling). Our philanthropic agencies have included the Open Door and the Alice Paul House.
Sigma Theta Tau: Zeta Lambda Chapter
The honor society for nursing majors, Sigma Theta Tau recognizes superior achievement and the development of leadership qualities, fosters high professional standards, encourages creative work, and strengthens commitment to the ideas and purposes of the nursing profession. Students may apply for membership to the Zeta Lambda Chapter after completion of one-half of the nursing component of the baccalaureate curriculum. Candidates are recommended by the Eligibility Committee and elected by the chapter membership.
Nurses Christian Fellowship
Nurse's Christian Fellowship (NCF) is a professional organization and a ministry for nurses and nursing students. Membership is open to all nursing students, professional nurses, and nursing faculty within the IUP community. Meetings are usually held twice a month and include a time of fellowship, prayer, and Bible study.
