The national search for a new provost and vice president for academic affairs begins June 4, with plans to review applications and hold campus interviews in the fall.
The provost is administratively responsible for all academic departments and programs and serves as acting president when the president is absent.
The 15-member search committee is being aided by an academic search firm, Academic Search Inc., to ensure a large, talented, and diverse pool of applicants.
The opening of the search follows meetings between Thomas Fitch, senior consultant with the firm, and members of the IUP and Indiana communities to discuss the qualifications needed for the job. The search committee met to review the qualifications and add information about the university and community to the search materials, according to Ben Rafoth, chair of the search committee.
A prospectus for the position was then forwarded to IUP President-designate Michael Driscoll and Interim President David Werner for their input.
For the next three months, advertisements for the opening will appear in national publications such as the Chronicle of Higher Education as well as on the Human Resources web site. The review of applications begins August 31, with campus interviews tentatively planned for late fall.

The new provost is expected to start in January 2013 or as soon thereafter as feasible, Rafoth said.
Gerald Intemann, current provost and vice president for academic affairs, announced in August 2011 his intention to leave the position and assume professorial duties.
