Colleagues:
We received news today that William Shane, who served on the IUP Council of Trustees from 1991 to 1995, died on Thursday in a car accident on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
A well-known figure in Indiana, Mr. Shane served over the years as a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, the Indiana County Board of Commissioners, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission, and the Indiana Borough Council. An avid sports fan, he attended many IUP football and basketball games, and he volunteered to assist with the university's Gateways to Opportunity capital campaign in the early 2000s. In recent years, he had taken classes at IUP and was an avid community volunteer.
His wife, Esther, is a professor emerita of the Special Education Department. According to news reports, she was with him at the time of his death, sustained injuries, and is now back home in Indiana.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. When this information becomes available, it will be posted on the IUP.edu website.
