Students will complete required course lessons online and attend skill labs on scheduled days. There are academic and attendance requirements in this course. The technical requirements, list of corequisites, and additional fees not included in the course cost are listed below. Students must be 18 years of age to enroll.
College Credit for IUP Students
IUP students who successfully complete the EMT course at IUP are eligible for up to four transfer credits through the Department of Kinesiology, Health, and Sport Science. Information can be obtained through the EMS coordinator.
The EMT Training Program is a "clock hour" certificate program. Students who complete the EMT certificate with IUP may be able to utilize the four-credit-hour transfer agreement.
The certificate program is ineligible for federal financial aid. This means that current undergraduate/graduate students enrolled in a credit hour degree program cannot utilize the certificate clock hours to meet financial aid (including scholarship) eligibility requirements. Nor will the EMT certificate clock hours be eligible for federal, state, or institutional financial aid. Students considering concurrent enrollment in both the EMT certificate and degree programs should contact the Office of Financial Aid to inquire how this decision may impact their financial aid awards.
Technical and Course Requirements
Students will need regular access to a reliable computer with:
- Current operating system
- Robust, high-speed internet connection
- Active email account
Students need to be able to create user accounts, navigate a web-based learning platform, send and receive emails, scan and attach files, and open attachments using common computer applications. Students without good academic or computer skills should consider a traditional classroom format instead.
Co-requisites:
In addition to online and lab sessions, students must complete 10 patient contacts at an approved field site. This will require a minimum:
- Up-to-date immunizations: measles/HepB/TB (cost varies)
- PSP criminal clearance ($10)
- HIPPA training through Castle Branch.
- Liability insurance at student rates ($42 HPSO) for unaffiliated students uploaded to Castle Branch.
- Costs or fees to meet these requirements are not included in the course fee.
Students will complete these online co-requisite courses before the end date of the class in order to be eligible for certification:
- IS 100.b (available free online)
- IS 700.a (available free online)
- Hazardous Materials Awareness course
Criminal History
Students must complete a criminal history form for the Pennsylvania Department of Health upon enrollment in the course. Students with a positive criminal history may not be eligible for EMT certification or field/clinical experiences. For more information, please see the NREMPT policy or the PA DOH EMS regulations.

Preregistration is required. Anyone interested in attending should complete the registration by using the EMT Registration link and make the $225 nonrefundable deposit to ensure your seat in the class. Enrollment is limited and will be accepted until the class is filled. IUP reserves the right to cancel any program due to insufficient enrollment, at which time deposit/registration fees would be refunded.
