Academic Advising

The Center for Teaching Excellence has historically supported faculty for advising support and resources until the establishment of the university-wide IUP Advising Center. The materials available on this page are archived resources that continue to be available to faculty for support. For the most updated resources, please visit the Advising Center for more information. 

Beginning in Fall 2023, the Advising Center was established as a university-wide active resource for faculty advisors on academic policy and requirements at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Advising Center provides professional development opportunities for faculty particularly on navigating the advising process and advising tools at IUP. The Advising Center also is a referral point for students who are needing additional advising assistance regarding policy, degree requirements, and needing guidance on major, minor, or certificate exploration. 

Advisors and Students: a Partnership

Academic advising at IUP is a partnership between our students and our faculty and staff. Working together, advisors help students take ownership of their educational goals and professional development.

• Encourage student personal growth and independence
• Guide students as they prepare for the world beyond graduation

Advisor Meetings Play an Important Role in Success

Students should meet or talk to their advisors regularly to:

• Plan their classes for the upcoming semester before scheduling
• Discuss requirements for their major and their academic progress (which can impact financial aid)
• Talk about internships and career goals
• Ask questions
