Joe Bandy (Vanderbilt University) provided professional development that focused on four obstacles to more inclusive teaching and how to address them in our practice: unconscious bias, stereotypes threat, course design choices, and enabling or inadequately coping with incivilities.
Inclusive teaching strategies are those that address the needs of students with a variety of backgrounds, learning modalities, and abilities. These approaches contribute to a learning environment in which all participants are engaged and respected, and in which participants are open to diverse ideas, perspectives, and ways of thinking.
Joe Bandy is the assistant director of the Center for Teaching and an affiliated faculty member in the Department of Sociology and Program in American Studies at Vanderbilt University. His administrative, research, and teaching projects relate to faculty development around high impact teaching practices—particularly case- and problem-based methods, service learning/community engagement, and inclusive excellence—and has championed teaching methods that support civic engagement, environmental sustainability, and critical understandings of social differences.
