Biology Students and Faculty Publish “Consumer Reports-style” Study to Optimize Tick Collection

Biology majors Emily Welch (MS’19), Anna Manges (BS’20), and Nathan Peters (BS ’19) and professors Joe Duchamp and Tom Simmons determined the best fabric for construction of drags used to collect blacklegged ticks which vector the pathogens causing Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, Borrelia miyamotoi disease, ehrlichiosis, and Powassan virus disease.

Research Instrumentation Grant Awarded to IUP Faculty

Vida Irani (Biology) and collaborators have published an interdisciplinary study on the tick-borne pathogens of Pennsylvania small mammal hosts titled ““Higher Prevalence of Babesia microti than Borrelia burgdorferi in small mammal species in central Pennsylvania, USA” in the peer-reviewed journal Vector-Borne and Zoonotic Diseases.

Rebekah Mikeasky has been announced as the winner of the 2018 Patricia Hilliard Robertson Memorial Scholarship for Women in the Sciences. Third- and sixth-grade students at St. Bernard Regional learned about different ways to maintain and examine heart health, and then tested their own heart function. Duchamp Featured in “Scientific American” Offering Expert Commentary on Bat Habitats

January’s “Scientific American” magazine features Joseph Duchamp, associate professor and assistant chair of IUP’s Biology Department, offering expert commentary about bat habitats. The article, “Bats in the Bronx,” discusses a study in New York City examining if roofs with vegetation (green roofs) attract more bats than barren rooftops.

Ruby Leading Research Study on Alcohol and Circadian Rhythms

Christina Ruby, a member of the biology faculty, is the first author of a study, “Differential Sensitivity to Ethanol-Induced Circadian Rhythm disruption in Adolescent and Adult Mice.” The study was published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinicaland Experimental Research. Four IUP undergraduate students worked closely with Ruby on the project and are co-authors on the study.

Simmons Coauthors Review Article on Mosquito Parasites

IUP Biology professor Tom Simmons and Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection entomologist Mike Hutchinson coauthored the article, “A Critical Review of All Known Published Records for Water Mite (Acari: Hydrachnidiae) and Mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae) Parasitic Associations From 1975 to Present,” published in the Journal of Medical Entomology on April 25, 2016.

Students from the environmental biology course taught 110 fourth-grade students from Eisenhower Elementary School how to safely explore the woods, which can be inhabited by the blacklegged tick. The elementary school students spent their whole day on the IUP campus learning about science.

Townsend Appointed International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List Authority for Mesoamerican Amphibians

Townsend will maintain the assessments for the IUCN global endangered species list and lead the formation of a new Mesoamerican Working Group for Amphibians. Mesoamerica has a highly diverse and endangered amphibian fauna, with over one-third of nearly 800 species threatened with extinction.
