The American Language Institute Provisional program offers conditional admission for students to study English at the ALI before starting a degree program at IUP. Individuals with conditional admission enroll as full-time ALI students until they submit proof of English proficiency for the Bridge Program or their intended degree program.
Undergraduate Conditional Admission
Students can receive conditional admission to an undergraduate program at IUP while they study at the ALI to meet the university language proficiency requirement. This requirement can be met by submitting a qualifying test score (iBT 61, IELTS 5.5, ITP 500, DET 90, CAE 160) or by successfully completing the Bridge Program.
To participate in the Bridge Program, students must submit a qualifying score (iBT 54, IELTS 5.0, ITP 480, DET 85, CAE 155) and receive approval from the ALI. Students in the Bridge Program are permitted to take up to six IUP credits per semester, along with four ALI classes. Students who successfully complete nine credit hours at IUP, including English 101 through the Bridge Program, may be eligible to waive the language exam requirements for undergraduate admission.
Graduate Conditional Admission
ALI-P conditional admission is also available for select graduate programs:
- Biology (MS)
- Geography (MS)
- Health Services Administration (MS)
- Human Resources and Employment Relations (MA)
- Instructional Design and Learning Technologies (MA)
- Master of Business Administration (MBA)
- Music (MA)
- Sports Management/Sport Science (MS)
Applicants must meet all requirements for admission except proof of English proficiency and be approved by their academic program to receive conditional admission. Prospective students should indicate their interest in ALI-P on the graduate application.
Applicants who receive conditional graduate admission have one year to meet English proficiency requirements for full admission. To fulfill the requirements for full admission, students can submit a qualifying test score (see specific program requirements) or successfully complete the Bridge Program.
To participate in the Bridge Program, students must meet program standards (iBT 61, IELTS 5.5, ITP 500, CAE 160) and receive approval from the ALI and their graduate coordinator. Students in the Bridge Program can take up to six IUP credits per semester along with their ALI classes. Students who successfully complete six graduate credits along with their ALI coursework may be eligible to waive the language exam requirements for graduate admission.
