The Family Medical Leave Act entitles eligible employees of covered employers to take unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family and medical reasons with continuation of group health insurance coverage under the same terms and conditions as if the employee had not taken leave.
Permanent/regular employees with at least one year of total employment service (even if the employment was not continuous) are entitled to twelve (12) weeks of family care leave without pay every calendar year to care or arrange care for a family member with a serious health condition.
Twelve (12) weeks equates to:
- 450 hours for employees working 7.5-hour days
- 480 hours for employees working 8.0-hour days
- 60 days for faculty
- prorated amount of hours for part-time employees
