Crimson Youth Choir Presents Fall Concert

The Crimson Youth Choir, the children and young adult choir of the IUP Community Music School, and under the direction of Kye-Won Doyle, will present their end-of-semester fall concert in a cabaret style at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 17, in the Blue Room of Sutton Hall on the IUP main campus.

Music Department and Community Music School Partner In New Student-Centered Ensemble

The IUP Music Department and the IUP Community Music School are excited to partner for the spring 2022 semester in offering University Band, a special topics course [MUSC 281]. This new, student-centered ensemble will provide a unique and intergenerational playing opportunity for non-music students, music majors on their secondary instruments, and community members ages 15 and up.

Indiana Concert Band Fall Concert

The Indiana Concert Band of the IUP Community Music School will present its fall concert on Thursday, December 9, at 7:30 p.m. in Gorell Recital Hall. Under the direction of IUP music professor Jason Worzbyt, the band will present a variety of selections from the concert band repertoire.

Student Brass Quintets to Present Recitals

The IUP Freshman Brass Quintet and the Legacy Brass Quintet will present recitals on Sunday, December 5, in DiCicco Hall (Rm. 121) in the Cogswell Music Building on the IUP campus. The programs will begin at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. and are free and open to the general public.

Department of Music Announces Winners of Concerto Competition 

From a field of 12 competitors, three students were selected as winners in the return of the Department of Music’s Concerto Competition: David Earnest, trombone; Kayla Holsopple, tuba; and Austin Widmann, trumpet.

IUP Jazz Band and Jazz Ensemble to Present Fall Concert

The IUP Jazz Band and Jazz Ensemble will present their annual Fall jazz concert on Tuesday, November 16. The performance will be held in Fisher Auditorium in the Performing Arts Center on the IUP campus, and will begin at 8:00 p.m. Both ensembles are led by Kevin Eisensmith.

Quah Performs Solo Piano Recital at IUP

Assistant professor of piano at Penn State University, Melody Quah, will give a solo piano recital on Tuesday, November 16, 2021 at 8:00 p.m. in Gorell Recital Hall (second floor of Sutton Hall). Admission is free.

IUP Symphony Orchestra Performs with Grammy-Winning Fiddlers Mark and Maggie O'Connor

The IUP Symphony Orchestra will combine with the Johnstown Symphony Youth Orchestra on Sunday, November 7 to perform with featured soloists Mark and Maggie O'Connor. The O'Connors are world-renowned, Grammy-winning fiddlers, and Mr. O'Connor will perform his revolutionary Improvised Violin Concerto.

Guest Artist Holder to Offer Self-Producing Workshop

BIPOC arts instigator and early-career producer Amber Holder will speak at an IUP Theatre and Dance Forum on Friday, September 10, 4:40–5:30 p.m. in the Waller Hall main theatre.  A brief talk on creating a performing arts career with radical programming in this "gig economy" will be followed by an interview and questions from attendees.

String Project Accepting Applications for Fall 2021 Semester

Members of IUP Brass Area Meet with Alumnus Composer O'Toole

On May 3, 2021, brass students from the IUP Department of Music met with composer Anthony O’Toole ’11, who was commissioned to write a new work for brass quintet. This work will be premiered by the department’s scholarship brass quintet as part of their fall 2021 recital.

Music Department Presents 21st Annual IUP Jazz Festival

The Department of Music of Indiana University of Pennsylvania will present the IUP Jazz Festival on Saturday, May 1, in Fisher Auditorium in the Performing Arts Center on the IUP campus. The Festival begins at 7:00 p.m. and is free and open to IUP faculty and students only, due to COVID-19 restrictions. The recital will also be live- streamed on YouTube.

Marching Band to Delay 100th Anniversary Celebration to 2022

For everyone to stay safe and healthy while enjoying an epic celebration, we have determined that delaying the celebration until fall 2022 will assure the chance for us to celebrate fully together as this monumental anniversary deserves. We look forward to planning and celebrating the Legend’s Centennial with you.

IUP TrumpetFest, April 23-24

TrumpetFest 2021 is scheduled for April 23 and 24, and will feature performances by IUP trumpet students and faculty. All events will be held in Gorell Recital Hall in Sutton Hall, and are free and open to members of the IUP campus only, due to COVID-19 restrictions.

IUP music faculty and friends bring their dynamic performance skills to a program of music both new and old, including violin sonatas by Beethoven and Grieg, a Handel cantata, plus an exciting new work for string trio.

Department of Music to Hold Cellobration Day, Now Accepting Applications

The IUP String Area is hosting an IUP Cellobration Day on Saturday, April 10, featuring Linda Jennings and Alexandra Dee in the morning and Cello Fury in the afternoon. Cellists in grades 6–12 are invited for a free day of music-making in Fisher Hall on the IUP campus.

IUP String Area Hosts High School Honors Orchestra Festival

The IUP Music Department's String Area hosted the IUP High School Honors Orchestra Festival on Saturday, February 13, 2021. Students from seven high schools spent the day rehearsing and then performed a live-streamed concert.

Wong Doe Presents Workshop for Steinway Society of Western Pennsylvania

Piano faculty member Henry Wong Doe’s online workshop, “Timing, Phrasing, Balance, and Pedalling: Refining Your Approach to the Piano,” focused on important aspects of piano playing. The attendees were around 40 students from private teachers in the greater Pittsburgh Area, members of the Steinway Society of Western Pennsylvania.

Pipkin-Hutchinson Receives Gold Medallion Award from KC-ACTF

Associate Professor Nancy Pipkin-Hutchinson in the Department of Theatre, Dance, and Performance was presented with the Kennedy Center Gold Medallion during a virtual ceremony the evening of January 15, 2021.

Engelstad Presents on Conducting Vocabulary at FMEA Conference

On January 16, 2021, IUP clarinet professor Rosemary Engelstad and Brittan Braddock ’16, director of bands at University of Western Florida, co-presented “Balance, Posture, and Gesture: Expanding Conducting Vocabulary for Better Health,” a session for music educators at the 2021 Florida Music Educators Association conference.

Students, Faculty, and Staff Attend Pittsburgh Racial Justice Summit

The 23rd Annual Pittsburgh Racial Justice Summit was held virtually on January 22–23, sponsored by the Office of Social Equity and Title IX. The Summit used community dialogue to discuss the importance of critically re-evaluating our respective histories, specifically the impact of white supremacy and how it has caused widespread dehumanization and exploitation throughout global and local history.

Desoto-Jackson Appointed to Pittsburgh Gender Equity Commission

Rachel DeSoto-Jackson, associate professor of Applied Theatre in the Department of Theatre, Dance, and Performance, has been appointed to the Pittsburgh Gender Equity Commission in the Mayor’s Office of Equity as a member of the review committee for RFP20000464 “Community-Based Research on Gender Equity in Pittsburgh.”

While this workshop had been presented in person in previous years, this year’s workshop engaged participants virtually via Zoom.

Theatre Department Founding Professor and Former Chair Passes

A. Lynn Lockrow, a founding faculty member of IUP’s Theater Department in the 1970s, passed away from COVID-19 in Manteo, North Carolina, on January 3.
